Waning Moon

Behold there is beauty all around us! Even with most of our daily allowance of hours dedicated to the darkness of night, there is beauty all around us. The moon appears more luminous now that the velvet cloak descends earlier and earlier with each day we approach Winter Solstice. How else does your world come alive in Winter?

Reflect on the features of your bio-region. Does your sky cry icy tears at this time of year? Or do you live in a softer climate, where the Season's turns are far subtler? Is there a particular Earth-spirit that calls you to visit at dawn, dusk, midnight or noon? A favorite rock on a hill? A rolling crescendo of nearby mountains? A cliff overlooking a crashing ocean? A lone tree in an urban play park?

Where do you go to nourish yourself with nature in December? Bundle yourself up if you must and go to this place tonight. If you are unable to visit this place in the flesh, take yourself there in your mind. What do you observe about this place? What are its beauties? What does the spirit of the place teach you? Enjoy at least fifteen minutes of silence, communing with this locale.

We are creatures of the Earth, made of the same matter and energy as the Earth itself — all of which source their origin in the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago. You and I and that tree and the ocean cliff all come from the same place. We are siblings and cousins. Extend a blessing from your heart to this place. Receive a gift of healing in return.

From me to you
And you to me,
An embrace of
Cosmic unity.

When you get back home, with the comfort of a warming tea, write a love letter to your sacred place. Thank and appreciate the land for its nourishment. Sing out its praises, if you're inspired Or compose a poem. This place is a part of you. When you love it, you love yourself.
