Waning Moon
With Samhain on October 31 and El Dia de los Muertos, All Saints' Day, and All Souls' Days on November 1 and 2, this week witnesses sacred celebrations all around the world. These holy days share the same theme: honoring the beloved dead. Depending on your faith or culture, the beloved dead are the saints, the martyrs and the faithful who have yet to be cleansed of their sins; the members of your family and community who have passed from this earthly world to whatever lives beyond; the ancestors who walked this path before us and who have paved the way for future generations.
Who are your beloved dead? Is there a special ancestor -- of your own blood line or not -- whose invisible hand guides you from beyond, steering you clear of mishaps? Is there an historical figure whose heroism inspires you across eras? Who has died this year, whose physical absence still draws forth your grief in tears? Who has died in previous years, whose memory fills you with laughter and joy?
Create an altar to your beloved dead. Lay down a white cloth. (White here symbolizes the spirit realm.) Add flowers, candles, and keepsakes from or photos of the dead, if you have them. Cook up a meal these ancestors would have enjoyed. Set out a plate of this yummy food for the spirits and help yourself to a serving. Share a meal with your ancestors, lifting your glass to toast their accomplishments, their impact on your life, their contribution to the world, the beauty in their souls.
As you remember the ones who have passed, you honor your roots. Dig deep into the experience of loving the dead; it is one of the gifts of the season's dark times. Knowing where you come from -- what has shaped you -- helps you choose where you are going. Close your ritual with words of gratitude for all your beloved dead have offered you.

You may wish to keep your altar fresh for a few days or even until Thanksgiving.
After the ritual, share your experience in our community section.
